Gok’s tips for dressing for university    ·    August 16th, 2008

You can always count on Gok giving top tips on how to dress for certain occasions, and this time he tells you how to dress for university. Read what Gok has to say below and after the jump:

University is an amazing time, you’ve got total freedom of expression. Once you go into a corporate arena, you’re going to have to look a certain way and you’ll almost have a uniform. Remember you don’t have to get it right straight away - have fun with it, play around with it.

The main thing is to understand why we use clothes. It’s the easiest way to give people an indication of who we are. When an actor walks on stage, it’s the costume that tells you how old they are and what they do. We do this in life too, it’s all to do with identity and image. So when students start university, their outfit on their first day is going to do a lot of work for them. There’s no point in me telling you what to wear, you need to decide and give people an indication of your personality.

It’s always about getting a good base, which you can do on the high street, and then it’s about thinking outside the box. If you can change the hemline or the buttons or embellish it; that is going to make it feel unique and individual, whether you’re Victoria Beckham or Victoria Smith from Leicester.

Everyone’s got a style. If you’re dressed in a tracksuit and Ugg boots, it’s still a style, whether you like it or not. Style and taste are very subjective. If you’re enjoying it and you feel comfortable then go for it.
